A Blog entry after some days, I wish to post another tonight.

Open source is a great idea, it can change our world by sharing of intellect. Powered by a large community, combining intelegence of large amount of people it can change the way we use computer.
Or is it? If not why everyone is talking about it?
Open source is indeed fashionable. It feels great to say I use open source software. But how much potential does it have?
Easiest comparison is windows and linux. Linux is never windows. I have used both and felt may open source can never catch pay softwares.
My use of open office did not change that idea, it is a bit slower than microsoft office. But I use open office ( because I don’t like to use pirated soft).
And then the browser came. Firefox, I have heard about it at the middle of 2004.( I am using internet from 2003). I haven’t used it as I used internet at public computer( more correctly at cyber cafe) then. I have internet connection in my home from July last year. Then I have downloaded three browser, Opera, Firefox and netscape.
I haven’t switched from IE then. Later when Firefox 1.5 released I have thought to give it a try. I was simply amazed, what have I been using this days.
This was my first experience with a good open source product. Then I have seen some other too, like netbeans, eclipse or the great programming language Java. And I am really looking forward of final release of Flock, the web 2.0 browser. ( Indeed now I am blogging with alpha version of this browser)
So, Open source can create real value software, may not be able to successfully develop large product like OS.
But can it replace completely closed source software, Isn’t it true that recently many closed source software became open source? Like eclipse, Sun Java studio creator, Solaris etc.
I don’t think it can.
First reason is open source is there because of closed source software.
It is not possible to fund all open source developer, who will fund for somethink that can be copied. Open source company may do good business, may they employ some programmer, but their code base is usually much larger. And this people does work for open source because they have other Job. They work for open source in their free time, probably as their hobby. So open source can never go without help of pay software. May free product is something all like, but we get it because we are paying for some thing else.
Open source is good in the sense that anyone can find a code when they need, so development is accelerated.
But bad because it makes establishing a new software company harder, Open source is one reason that small software company builts game while small internet company produces a innovative project.
But open source will be there because we programmer are strange people, our hobby is to kill our job.
